9-1 assignment
In the book To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee, the subculture that is the focus is Southern white people before the Civil Rights Movement. Reading this book gives me a more raw insight on racial prejudice than I had before starting the book. Am I an insider or outsider in relation to this subculture? At first, I thought that I was an outsider of this subculture group because the setting of this book is almost 100 years ago. Surely things are different today! We don't have these problems today, do we? Aren't we more civilized? As I got further in the book, I began to realize that the world I live in today is just as prejudiced as it was 100 years ago. We have new names for prejudice-new laws and ways to “deal” with prejudice. We pretend it is not here and hide it from our minds and hearts. But it is still here- alive and well. This book is as pertinent today as it was when it was written. Prejudice affects in one way or another, every person of every time period, of every socio-economic class. Rich or poor, black or white, or anything in between, must face prejudice. Reading about the prejudices of these white southerners made me evaluate myself. What I may call OK, may really be evidence of prejudice. I must ask myself, “Who do I prejudge and why? Have I climbed into his skin and walked around in it?” Is this awakening consciousness of prejudice a good thing? Yes it is because prejudice can only be dealt with when it is called by its ugly name- Prejudice!
